Once again this year, I will be participating in the PKD Foundation of Canada bikeathon! Its goal is to raise funds to fund research and finally find a cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) that ruins the lives of more than 13 million people worldwide!
The Ride to the Moon bikeathon takes place throughout the month of May. You choose your own goal of kilometers to do with your bicycle, which can be from 1 to infinity. 😉 The event is so called because together, we want to travel enough kilometers to reach the distance connecting us to the moon! Last year, I was still very sick when I did the bikeathon for the first time. I was still months away from knowing that I had people who wanted to donate a kidney to me and that I was going to have a transplant, and my energy was already extremely low. I had set myself the goal of a 100 km for the month, a figure that I found reasonable being a regular biker. Indeed, I used to often bikepack across Quebec, dragging my luggage on my hybrid bike for hundreds of kilometers. During one of these outings of several days, I have already done Mont-Orford to Longueuil by bike (a good 150km!) in one day. I was confident that I would be able to do 100 kilometres in a month.
Unfortunately, as usual, I had forgotten how bad my health was when choosing my goal 😉 In the whole month of May, I only managed to do 80 kilometers, so 80% of my goal. I thought I had chosen a reasonable goal! Ugh.
This year, everything is different
This year, my fitness and energy are quite different! I had my bike adjusted and went to check my abilities with a bike ride last Friday. I managed to do 20 km without any problem! I am absolutely flabbergasted! What a chance to live this new life!
I will still limit myself in my goal to 100 kilometers for the bikeathon. On the one hand, I don’t want to ask too much of me 5 months after the transplant. On the other hand, I like the contrast between what I will be able to do this year versus last year, a transplant later!
We’ll see how many kilometres I can ride!!! If you can encourage me, even with a $5, it’s this way!! And if you want to participate, you can either create a profile here or write to me on facebook or instragram to form a team!! Whether you donate or participate with me, we will end Polycystic Kidney Disease together! Last year we managed to be the team that raised the most funds for the campaign, can we do it again this year? It’s up to you! 🙂
See you soon,
